JOB DESCRIPTION

Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in social work, psychology, or or equivalent from an accredited university.
  2. Experience in a school setting preferred; training staff on mental health topics preferred.
  3. At least five years’ experience and training in dealing with students with anxiety, depression, mental health counseling, ODD, school avoidance, and substance abuse disorders.
  4. Ability to work effectively with staff, parents, and community members in a collaborative fashion.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work harmoniously in a multicultural, diverse
  6. Ability to work on site during the hours required including two evenings per month, flex hours and off site as needed.
  7. Required criminal background check and proof of US citizenship or legal alien status.
  8. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

Job Goal

Provide counseling services to meet the needs of students in grades 6 - 8 experiencing difficulty in school programs or settings. As a mental health professional, work with students and families to support them in order to build safeguards and structures that will allow them to improve their middle school experience.

Performance Responsibilities

  1. Provide therapeutic services to students and families in a coordinated setting with the school and community; both individual and group counseling services as well as family supports.
  2. Coordinate programs and services with other school-based activities and community agencies.
  3. Identify and plan appropriate strategies that will assist principals, guidance counselors and teachers in early intervention and student assistance techniques to enable students to remain in an educational setting with their peers.
  4. Conduct intake interviews with students and families to assess their situation.
  5. Observe student behavior to assess needs and create treatment strategies.
  6. Work closely with teachers, administrators, and other staff to identify students in need and/or crisis.
  7. Research and maintain contact with community social agencies concerned with school-age children or their families and make referrals for using these resources when appropriate.
  8. Work within the parameters of I&RS, 504, and RtI when needed.
  9. Collaborate with school staff to assess students’ and families’ needs, situations, strengths and weaknesses, and recommend support networks to encourage healthy emotional growth.
  10. Develop plans to improve students’ and families’ well being on an ongoing basis.
  11. Conduct bi-weekly meetings with school administration and counselors detailing students’ progress.
  12. Assist in creating and building protocols for crisis management in direct relationship with the District Mental Health Coordinator.
  13. Intervene when students are in danger of neglect or abuse by following Board policy and reporting procedures and providing means for follow-up.
  14. Communicate on a regular basis through reporting, phone, email, and conferences with the families of students being treated.
  15. Evaluate services provided on a regular basis to ensure that they are effective and make changes when necessary.
  16. Ability to diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues.
  17. Discuss and address individual student concerns including the discipline, suspension, exclusion or removal of a student from participating in extracurricular activities.
  18. Keep accurate and confidential records for all managed cases.
  19. Maintain a system for reevaluating students who have exited the program to ascertain if support is still needed or students are doing well.
  20. Maintain professional relationships with people, acting as a guide or advocate.
  21. Assist with in-service training programs for school personnel (administrators, teachers, guidance counselors, etc) in managing students with emotional and behavioral problems.
  22. Create a resource document for district teaching staff that highlights topics relevant to handling students at risk and include practical, real-life applications.
  23. Assume other related responsibilities and duties within the context of the above, state law and board policies.

Terms

10 month as contracted, salary and benefits as determined by the Board.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board’s policy on evaluation of non-certified staff.
